Winter Car Care Myths & Tips

Winter Car Care…Brrr!

Everyone you meet has their own need to know car care tips when it comes to winter or frigid, cold temperatures. While there are a lot of great tips floating around, there are just as many myths cluttering the conversation. How do you know which tips are really tips? Could these tips you’ve been following be causing damage to your vehicle? We’ve put together a list of truths and myths to consider when addressing winter car concerns.

Myth: You Should Let Your Car Warm Up Before You Drive

False. This rumor, in particular, has been perpetuated for decades. You will frequently hear people say they’re going to run out to the car to get it started and warmed up before leaving. It may be nice to get into a car that is slightly warmer than the outside air, but there is absolutely no proof that your engine warms while idling. In fact, the evidence suggests that the best way to warm your car up is to drive it.
Idling your car for an extended amount of time doesn’t efficiently heat the engine to the temperature it would reach while driving. Mainly, when idling your vehicle, you are wasting precious fuel and emitting excess carbon monoxide. If you’ve got a modern car, there is no benefit to heating your car up before driving.
Solution: Try driving your car without warming it up first. You may have just discovered you’ve given yourself an extra 5 minutes each morning!

Myth: Four Wheel Drive Will Keep You Safe

False. Four wheel drive should be viewed as a tool, not a safety net. Four-wheel drive will certainly help you reach your destination, no matter the road conditions, but it will do very little to help you in the event you need to abruptly stop the car. Others may say that as long as you’ve got winter tires, you’ve got even less to worry about. Again, this is not necessarily true regarding four wheel drive vehicles. It is suggested that having winter tires installed will allow a drive to stop about 30% faster in ice and snow, versus drivers using traditional tires. When tire shopping, be sure to pay close attention to the differences between all terrain and winter.

Solution: Drive cautiously and be aware of the road conditions before you leave. If you’ve got winter tires and a four wheel drive vehicle, keep in mind that you’re vehicle may be more capable, but it is not a snowmobile

Use Warm or Hot Water to Melt Ice

False. If you pour hot water onto frozen glass, you will find yourself with a broken windshield. Glass is extremely fragile and cannot handle the stress of being exposed to freezing conditions, immediately followed by boiling water. This will cause the glass to flex and then shatter. Instead, get a quality scrapper you can rely on. If you need something stronger, you can purchase a de-icer from any store, or make one at home.

Solution: Mix two parts rubbing alcohol and one part water in a spray bottle, and generously apply to the affected area
