Transmission fluid keeps the parts lubricated and cool so they don’t wear out prematurely and break down, potentially ruining the entire transmission. If the fluid overheats and breaks down, the transmission will run too hot and give off a burning smell. The extreme heat will result in increased friction and buildup of sludge and potential debris. Take heed, because if it goes on too long, the transmission will be damaged and possibly break down completely. A little preventative maintenance can go a long way. [Read more…]

What Happens if You Skip an Oil Change?
You’ve heard it many times – you should get your oil changed every 3,000 miles or three months. The limits are more forgiving on modern cars that use synthetic oil. But, skipping oil changes, no matter what schedule your owner’s manual recommends, can cause trouble. Going a long time between oil changes (thousands of miles past the due date) is bad for your engine.
Oil Lubricates and Cleans the Engine
What does engine oil do and where does it go?
Oil is a lubricant that prevents metal engine parts from creating friction between one another. If parts do come into contact, the engine can overheat and the metal parts wear out or fail. Oil contains detergents that separate contaminants and carry them into the oil filter to be removed from the oil as it processes through the engine and components.
Oil Eventually Wears Out & Needs to be Changed
Oil is subject to high temperatures, which breaks it down, compromising its viscosity or ability to lubricate. Sludge forms in the engine, making it difficult for oil to flow between the many moving parts. Viscosity modifiers also break down over time, so the oil becomes thinner and less effective at lubricating the engine, especially at high temperatures. Metal particles, dirt, and other particulates build up in the oil, much of which is too small to be captured by the filter. Over time, detergents and additives meant to combat the contaminants and dirt will break down become less able to protect the engine. The oil becomes ineffective, which means parts experience high levels of friction and wear, which in turn shortens the life of the engine.
Get an Oil Change
Flush out the oil and crud with an oil change at your local Minnesota AAMCO. If you don’t change your oil and oil filter, the filter will clog and stop working, dirt will accumulate in the engine and further contaminate the oil, as well as compromise the oil’s ability to lubricate and clean. Over time, even the best oil – synthetic included – will lose its ability to lubricate and cleanse the engine. Eventually, the whole engine can seize up and stop working. At the very worst, it will overheat and catch fire. Don’t let this happen – schedule your oil change with AAMCO Minneapolis.
