You Put Your Key in the Ignition And…Nothing
You’re already running late for work only to discover your vehicle won’t start. There is nothing more frustrating than trying to figure out why you can’t get your car started let alone being late to your important destination. It can be incredibly challenging to sort out what issue is responsible for your car not working, but you don’t have to go in blind. We are going to address some of the common causes to look at if you find yourself in this situation.

Common Reasons Your Car Won’t Start
Is Your Battery Dead?
This may seem like a no brainer, but you’d be surprised how often a dead car battery is responsible for slowing you down. It is easy to accidentally drain your battery and not even know it has happened. Maybe you left your headlamps on overnight or your kid bumped the overhead light while climbing through your car! But sometimes, batteries die from old age, extreme climates, or a faulty electrical system.
Have You Noticed Problems Starting Your Car?
A broken or faulty starter is a common reason why your vehicle may not start. Has your car been especially noisy recently when turned on? Does your car always start when you turn the key? Are you hearing a loud clicking sound when you turn the ignition key, only to find the car doesn’t start? These are all clear signs that point to an issue with your starter. There are several components within your starter which could be faulty or broken and contributing to the issues you’re experiencing. If you suspect your starter is not working properly, it is time to get your car to the shop!
When Was Your Fuel Filter Changed Last?
Believe it or not, your fuel filter could be the reason your vehicle won’t start. If the fuel filter is restricted in anyway, your vehicle may not start, cut out, or lose power when driving on an incline, like a bridge or hill. When a fuel filter is dirty, the fuel pump will begin to overwork itself to compensate for the filter’s condition, which will inevitably cause damage to the pump. Debris and dirt in the fuel filter will prevent gas from reaching the engine, so this is a part you should have inspected periodically. Some recommendations suggest a filter be changed every 10,000 – 15,000 miles, but each car is different. Review your manual or bring your car by your closest AAMCO location.
Your Ignition Switch Could Be to Blame
If you know that your battery is charged and working properly, and you’ve been able to confirm this by turning on your headlights successfully, you could be looking at an issue related to your ignition switch. If your key goes in, but you cannot turn it, be sure to check that the steering column is not locked and that you can freely move the steering wheel. If you have a spare key, it is always a good idea to try that, too. It is possible that your key could be worn, but if the problem applies to your normal key and your spare, you’ve got an issue with your ignition switch.
