Is It Time for a New Air Filter?
A car’s engine is a complicated machine. Engines have evolved a lot over the years and have become more intricate and complicating. One thing has remained the same: your engine requires air and gasoline in the combustion chamber to power your vehicle. When air flow is restricted, you will notice your vehicle struggling to get the power it needs. Let’s take a look at what happens when it is time to replace your air filter.

Ways To Know You Need a New Air Filter
Visually Inspect Your Filter
These air filters are typically accessible with ease when you open your hood. Refer to your owner’s manual for a detailed explanation of how to reach this filter. New air filters are nearly white. Over time, these filters accumulate dirt and air contaminants which cause the filter to turn brown or black. In the transitional months (spring and fall), you may want to check this more frequently to ensure no mice or little critters have nested. Visual confirmation of your air filter is the best way to determine if it is the problem at hand.
Suffering Fuel Economy
When this air is restricted, your engine has to work extra hard to perform its most basic function of generating power. Newer cars, however, with fuel-injected engines may not notice this as much since these have onboard computer systems which calculate the amount of air intake and adjusts fuel flow accordingly. If you’re noticing that your fuel isn’t lasting as long as it normally would, it may be a clear sign that your filter needs to be changed. If it has been some time since you’ve had your car worked on, it may be time for Factory Recommended Car Maintenance.
New Engine Sounds
Anytime you hear a sound that is not familiar, it is common to react with concern. But sometimes, a sound can really help you pinpoint which area of your vehicle should be inspected. When your car is on and in a stationary position, you should sense a smooth vibration, but if you’re experiencing excessive vibrations, or hear a coughing or popping sound, it is often an indicator that there is a dirty or damaged spark plug to blame.
Engine Misfiring
When the filter is dirty, and the air supply is restricted, soot builds up as a result of unburnt fuel exiting the engine. This soot usually accumulates on the spark plugs which affects their ability to deliver the spark required to combust the air-fuel mixture. If the spark plugs aren’t working properly, you may notice that the engine doesn’t easily start up, misfires, or jerks roughly.
Check Engine Light
A check engine light does not immediately point to an issue with your air filter and can illuminate for any number of reasons. When soot and impurities build up, it can trigger your check engine light to come on because overall engine performance is impacted. We recommend getting your service code read by your trusted mechanic, and give us a call to discuss scheduling your FREE Fall Safety Check.
Smell of Gasoline When Starting the Car
If your engine is not receiving enough oxygen through the carburetor or fuel ejection system, when you start the car the excess unburnt fuel exits the car through the exhaust pipe. If this happens, and you smell gas when starting your vehicle, it is time to replace the air filter.
