Wet & Icy Weather Driving Tips

Do You Know How To Stay Safe in Wet or Icy Conditions?

It is easy to assume that a good set of tires means your car is in perfect shape for driving on snowy, wet, or icy roads. This is not necessarily the case. While having tires in a great condition is ideal, they are just a part of what contributes to safe driving, especially in extreme weather conditions. We are going to take a look at what can contribute to accidents in wet weather, and hopefully help you avoid any serious issues during these winter months!

4 Things You Need to Know Before Driving in Wet or Icy Conditions

Poor Visibility

Driving through a heavy rain fall can be as bad, if not worse, than driving in fog alone. The wipers can be turned on full speed and just not keep up with the rain that is falling making driving all the more stressful. As the stress builds, so does your anxiety. If you find yourself in this situation, the smartest move may be to stop until the weather breaks. If you haven’t yet, we strongly encourage you to review our Winter Prep Checklist to ensure that your vehicle is ready for wintery, wet roads.

Slow Down & Leave Space

No matter what the road conditions are like, it is always encouraged that you leave plenty of space between you and the car in front of you. This is especially true whenever wet roads are part of the equation. Your tires are working harder when water is involved, they must work to displace that water, so the rubber really can meet the road. To reduce the chances of hydroplaning, drivers should be slow and deliberate. Avoid braking or turning quickly and follow the tracks of the car you’re following.

How To Handle Skidding

Even the most careful of drivers will skid at some point in time. When you first feel the tires lock up and the car going in a new direction, the immediate response may be to panic. Don’t do this! There are a few things you can do to avoid danger. Continue to steer in the direction you’re wanting to go but be careful not to overcorrect the wheel (i.e. turning it sharply instead of gradually). It is also important to avoid slamming the brakes. This can throw the car’s weight off and make it more difficult to control. Stay calm. Pump your brakes and try to slowly get back on course. If you haven’t had your brakes inspected recently, schedule an appointment to have your brake system serviced.

Turn Your Headlights On

Every state has a law stating headlights must be turned on in low visibility situations. This doesn’t just help to keep you safe by being able to see what is around you but it helps other drivers see you’re on the road too. It is also important to check that your taillights are working correctly. If you’re concerned that your headlamps or taillights need some attention, schedule an appointment for an auto tune-up.

Drive Safely and Confidently

You already have a lot to worry about, the last thing you’ve got time to worry about is car damage after an avoidable accident. Wet, rainy, or snowy weather shouldn’t slow you down.
