Everything You Need to Know About a Transmission Fluid Flush

A vehicle’s fluid performs typically two critical functions, cleaning, and lubrication. As the fluid goes through the internal components, it gathers metal shavings, debris, and dirt that accumulate over time. Most times, this debris will settle at the bottom and not circulate within the system. It is due to this that you might need a transmission flush to remove all the dirt and debris in the system.

There’s nothing that extends the life of your vehicle like regular fluid changes. You might not know this, but your transmission fluid is the lifeblood of your transmission system. If you own an automatic transmission car, it won’t budge without transmission fluid. However, you would need a considerable leak to lead to a situation where there isn’t any fluid in your transmission.

What is Transmission Flushing?

Transmission flushing is merely replacing the transmission fluid. It is the process where you get rid of the old fluid by draining it and pouring in the new liquid to restore the old —no different than the regular oil change. It is important to note that this method is not 100% effective since it leaves some residue in the system, which could compromise the fresh liquid.

It is due to this reason that a fluid flush service needs to be performed by a professional mechanic such as one from AAMCO, Minnesota. Our expert mechanics, with the help of our state-of-the-art equipment, will use the vehicle’s transmission pump to flush out the oil liquid while simultaneously pumping in new. They will inspect for dirt and debris and use a solvent to clear out the line before pumping new fluid.

Transmission Fluid Problems

It’s important to note that not all transmission fluid is the same. But, all transmissions experience wear over time, causing debris and dirt to collect in the fluid. Furthermore, your transmission system could have problems that are forcing your transmission fluid to get damaged or degraded, causing further issues. You could also experience transmission fluid leaks. The moment you notice a leak, get your mechanic to inspect it, find the leak, seal it and top up.

When Do I Need to Perform a Transmission Flush?

Depending on your vehicle’s make, model and year, a transmission flush is recommended every 30,000 miles. You will still need to perform a flush in the following situations:

a) When your transmission is not running as required. You might need a transmission flush the moment you experience any jerking, surging, slipping of gears, or odd noises during shifts. While these symptoms point out a serious issue, a flush might help reveal the real problem.

b) When your transmission fluid is dirty or produces a burnt smell. Most automatic transmission vehicles have a dipstick, just like your oil dipstick. Proper transmission fluid looks clear or bright red with a sweet smell. However, if the fluid is black or smells burnt, it needs replacing.

Is It Possible for Transmission Flush to Harm My Transmission?

There’s a lot of debate that performing a transmission flush could harm your transmission system by dislodging settled debris along the transmission system line. However, this might only happen when you use a machine to force fluid back through the system instead of gently flushing it down. At AAMCO, Minnesota, we have years of experience maintaining and repairing transmissions. Our expert technicians will gently push out the fluid and clean out the lines with a solvent to ensure no dirt remains in the system.

Will a Transmission Flush Service Solve My Transmission Issues?

Please note, flushing out your transmission fluid is not a cure for existing transmission problems. In case you experience issues such as erratic shifting of gears or loud grinding noises during shifts, you might have a serious transmission problem that needs checking out. While performing a transmission flush will delay the problem, it won’t necessarily solve the underlying issues. We’re here for you every step of the way.
