Winter Car Care…Brrr!
Everyone you meet has their own need to know car care tips when it comes to winter or frigid, cold temperatures. While there are a lot of great tips floating around, there are just as many myths cluttering the conversation. How do you know which tips are really tips? Could these tips you’ve been following be causing damage to your vehicle? We’ve put together a list of truths and myths to consider when addressing winter car concerns.
Myth: You Should Let Your Car Warm Up Before You Drive
Idling your car for an extended amount of time doesn’t efficiently heat the engine to the temperature it would reach while driving. Mainly, when idling your vehicle, you are wasting precious fuel and emitting excess carbon monoxide. If you’ve got a modern car, there is no benefit to heating your car up before driving.
Solution: Try driving your car without warming it up first. You may have just discovered you’ve given yourself an extra 5 minutes each morning!
Myth: Four Wheel Drive Will Keep You Safe
Solution: Drive cautiously and be aware of the road conditions before you leave. If you’ve got winter tires and a four wheel drive vehicle, keep in mind that you’re vehicle may be more capable, but it is not a snowmobile
Use Warm or Hot Water to Melt Ice
Solution: Mix two parts rubbing alcohol and one part water in a spray bottle, and generously apply to the affected area
