Top Summer Car Care Tips

Get Your Suspension Checked

Winter can be hard on your car’s suspension. Potholes, icy roads, and snowy slush can wreak havoc on the underside of your car, from rusting metal parts to knocking them around, causing cracks and bends. If you do have a problem with your car’s suspension system, it can easily lead to more issues, from uneven tire wear to serious problems handling. Staying ahead of major car repair needs by having a seasonal inspection done can save a lot of grief further down the road.

Look Out for Changes in Handling or a Bumpy Ride

Pay attention when you drive. Do you feel every bump in the road? Does your car not handle turns as well as it used to? Is there a tendency to drift to the left or right when you let go of your steering wheel? Any and all of these can be a sign that you have a suspension problem. Whether it’s been growing for a while or just started after hitting that last pothole, it’s a good idea to get it checked.

Make Sure You and Your Engine Can Stay Cool

You may have had your heating system checked in the winter to ensure you could stay warm. If that’s the case, they likely would have caught a problem with your AC, too. It’s still a good idea to make sure, plus ensure your radiator is ready and coolant levels sufficient to keep your engine cool, too.

An Air Conditioning Inspection Can Catch Problems Early

It’s easy enough to check your coolant levels yourself but air conditioning problems can sneak up on you. Getting an air conditioning inspection is a sure way to catch potential problems early. The last thing you want on a hot summer afternoon is to have your AC die on you suddenly.

Ensure Your Fluids are Still Full and Clean

You can easily check most of your fluids at home – and it’s a good idea to do so regularly. Check the levels, consistency, and smell of your engine oil, transmission fluid, and coolant from time to time. This way you can catch any leaks before they cause serious damage, as well as getting a transmission fluid flush or cooling system service to keep your car running optimally.

Don’t Forget Twice-a-Year Oil Changes

Regardless of your oil level, you should get your oil and oil filter changed twice a year. Over time, engine oil degrades and the recommended period of time before changing to fresh oil is about six months. Otherwise, you risk causing extra wear to the inner parts of your engine and running into much bigger problems down the line.

Check Your Tires & Brakes

Winter months can also be hard on your tires. Potholes and temperature changes can cause extra or uneven wear on your tires, plus extra moisture from snow and ice can rust metal parts of your brake system. Not to mention, you may use your brakes a bit more in the winter with adverse weather conditions, wearing down brake pads faster.

Prevent Blowouts from Over-Full Tires

One thing you can easily do from home is checking your tire pressure. During the winter, you may have to add extra air as temperatures drop. The reverse will happen as temperatures rise again. The risk in the summer is having too much air in your tires and having potential blowouts when you hop on the highway. The combination of warmer outside temperatures and the heat from friction between the tires and the road can cause overfull tires to burst.

Head Off Battery Problems

Seasonal battery checks are a great way to avoid coming out to a car that won’t start. Both winter and summer conditions can be harsh on car batteries, especially if you don’t have a good way to shelter your car from the elements, such as a garage or cover.

Do a Quick Visual Check and Have a Mechanic Run a Test

You can easily check how dirty and corroded battery connections are and clean them with baking soda and water as necessary. However, the surest way to know your battery is in good shape and still has plenty of life left is to have your battery checked as part of a summer safety check.
