How Can I Tell if My Transmission is Going Bad

No one wants to hear those dreaded words: “You need a transmission repair.” Luckily, if you pay attention to signs of your transmission failing, you can likely keep the priciest repairs at bay. When caught early enough, transmission repairs can be more localized and avoid a full transmission replacement, which can be stressful for both you and your wallet. Here, we’ll go over some signs you may need to schedule a transmission service appointment with your mechanic.

You’ll Notice Trouble When Driving

Your transmission is a key player in keeping your car operational. That means if there’s trouble brewing for your transmission, you’ll notice it in how your car handles while driving. Typically, the power generated in your engine and changes made in your transmission impacts what your car’s wheels do, in particular through changing gears to accelerate.

Difficulty Changing Gears

This is one of the top reasons people will bring their car to a mechanic for a transmission repair. Whether you have a manual transmission or an automatic transmission, you’ll notice difficulty changing gears when there’s trouble with your transmission. Often, the underlying problem is that your transmission fluid is old and low so your gears haven’t been properly lubricated. If you recently had a transmission flush done, it’s possible the wrong type of transmission fluid was used and is causing difficulty changing gears.

Slipping Gears

You may notice your car revving or chug at odd times. This is likely a result of your gears slipping, which can turn into a major transmission repair. Because this is also such a safety issue when driving, it’s a good idea to get your car to a mechanic as soon as possible when you notice this – and possibly a tow there, depending on how badly your gears are slipping.

Inability to Change Gears

Keep an Ear and Eye Out for Other Signs

It’s possible the earliest signs of a problem with your transmission may not show up in how your car handles. The earlier you catch a necessary transmission repair, the better, so pay attention to any of these signs as well – and get your car to a mechanic if you start to notice them.

Transmission parts

Burning Smell

There are a lot of possible causes for a burning smell coming from your car and none of them are good. It could be your transmission overheating or your transmission fluid may be old and burning. If you suspect either of these is likely, it’s time to get your car to a mechanic.

Strange Noises in Neutral

Typically, your car should not make strange sounds or vibrate when idling in neutral. If you start to notice different sounds when you aren’t driving, it likely points to a problem with your transmission that should be diagnosed and repaired as soon as possible to prevent further damage.

Humming, Whining, or Clunking

Any strange sounds while driving are just as worrisome as when you’re idle. If you notice a change in how your car sounds, whether whining or clunking or any other new sound, it’s time to get it to a mechanic for an inspection. It’s likely a problem with your engine or transmission and can easily cause more problems when ignored.

And a Couple Sure Signs You May Need a Transmission Repair

While the above signs can indicate a necessary transmission repair, these final symptoms also mean you need to get to a mechanic for transmission service as soon as possible.

Leaking Transmission Fluid

Take a look under your car. If you notice spots on the ground where fluid has leaked, it could be engine oil or transmission fluid. Whenever either of those is leaking, it’s time to pay a visit to your mechanic. Both play an essential role in keeping your engine and transmission operating well and preventing damage to the working parts. Transmission fluid will be red and sweet-smelling, so if you notice that under your car, you need to get your transmission checked out.

Your Check Engine Light Comes On

Finally, no one likes to see their Check Engine light come on. While it can signal a variety of issues with your car, one of them is a problem with your transmission. If you notice any of the above symptoms and then see your Check Engine light turn on, it’s time to get your transmission inspected.
