What’s Wrong WIth My Muffler

Muffler On The Fritz?

Muffler repairs and replacements are a common service every auto shop is familiar with addressing. If you own a vehicle, there will certainly come a day when you notice your muffler isn’t performing the way it should. The main reason that this service is so common is that it is a critical component of your vehicle’s exhaust system, therefore it experiences a lot of wear and tear. Not only does the muffler contribute to a car’s overall performance, but it keeps you safe from deadly, noxious fumes. Any damage to a muffler can quickly lead to larger concerns.

What Does a Muffler Do?

The Muffler Performs Three Main Tasks

First, and most commonly known, it makes your car run significantly quieter. Engines are really loud. Much louder than most are aware if the muffler is working properly. There are many mechanical processes happening within the engine all at once, but this sound is routed through the muffler, which ‘muffles’ the sound. Without this function, every car would be thunderous and deafening.
The second function of the muffler is that it helps to keep your car running smoothly. To effectively operate, your engine relies on compressive force, which pushes the pistons down, driving the wheels. The muffler ensures that enough compression is created by regulating the exhaust gas flow out of the vehicle. A car wouldn’t be very useful if it didn’t have a muffler. Without it, your car would constantly stall out, suffer from extremely low gas mileage, and have essentially no ‘get-up-and-go’.

Lastly, and arguably most importantly, the muffler filters exhaust gasses out and away from you and your vehicle. Due to the thousands of internal combustions occurring within your engine at any given time, your car is producing a lot of carbon monoxide. To dispel these gasses, there is a component called an exhaust manifold which directs these gasses to the muffler, which forces them under and away from your car.

My Muffler is Absolutely the Problem

First order of business… book an appointment and ask about our diagnostic inspection service, this will help us pinpoint your cars exact problem. Mufflers have a big job to do and are frequently exposed to intense heat and high pressure. This can result in rust or cracks to develop over time. Cracks and rust can significantly impact the muffler’s performance.

There are a few things to look for if you suspect your muffler needs some attention:

1. Decreasing Miles Per Gallon

Poor gas mileage does not necessarily indicate a problem with your muffler or exhaust system specifically, but along with other symptoms can be a clear indication of the problem at hand. Other areas that could contribute to lower fuel economy include dirty filters, extra cargo weight, or even low tire pressure. If you’ve verified other areas are in proper working order, you might be on the right track to suspect your muffler is responsible.

2. Noxious Odors

This is an important sign. Carbon Monoxide returning to the cabin can be life-threatening if exposure lasts too long. This is not a symptom to ignore or wait to resolve itself because it won’t. For your health and your family’s health, it is worthy of addressing swiftly.
