It’s never fun coming out to your car and finding it won’t start. There are several reasons you might find yourself in this situation. It could be as simple as a dead battery or it could mean you’re due for a transmission repair. Whether you’re able to fix it yourself or not, it’s helpful to understand what can cause a car to not start and take steps to avoid running into those issues.

Possible Causes for Your Car Not Starting
The most likely culprits for a car not starting are in your car’s electric system. However, there are a couple of other options. Some are simple and you may be able to fix them at home, while others will require a trip to your local mechanic for a car repair.
Your Battery is Dead
This is probably the first place your brain will go and it’s also most likely your problem. Keep jumper cables on hand so all you have to find is someone with a car. If your car battery is on its way out but hasn’t reached the end of its life yet, you’ll be able to jump-start your car and it will charge while you drive. It’s best to do a somewhat lengthy drive after jumping your car so that the battery doesn’t die again right away.
On the other hand, if jumping your car doesn’t work, your battery may be completely done – or it could be a larger issue with your electric system or transmission. Take note as to whether your dashboard lights come on or not. If nothing comes on inside the car, your battery is to blame. If your dashboard lights come on but your car won’t start, you’ll have to start looking for another cause.
You Have a Bad Ignition Switch or Starter
Your car’s electric system gets your engine running by using the ignition switch and starter. If you can tell your battery is working but your car still won’t start, your ignition switch is the next best guess. Otherwise, if there is a clicking noise when you try to start your car, it could be a broken starter. Your car’s starter provides the necessary force to get parts within your engine moving, so if it is failing or had already failed, you’ll have to replace it.

You Have a Clogged Fuel Filter
Simply put, your fuel filter allows fuel to flow into the engine and filters out any debris that can cause damage. When your fuel filter becomes clogged, fuel will not be able to properly enter the engine. One of the main signs you have a dirty or clogged fuel filter is difficulty starting your car. However, you may also notice hesitation while driving, a decrease in power/acceleration, or even stalling.
The general rule of thumb is to have your fuel filter replaced every 10,000-15,000 miles, though if you start to notice any of the above issues, it’s time to have your car inspected regardless of the number of miles.
You’re Out of Gas
It may sound crazy, but sometimes the problem really is this simple. If it’s been a while since you last filled up and you weren’t really paying attention the last time you parked, it’s possible you just need to top off your gas tank to get your car started.
You may not have any on hand, but if you’re able to get to a gas station, you can fill up a container to bring back to your car. If that doesn’t work, consider getting a tow truck to transport your car to a trusted mechanic to diagnose the problem.
